Pentagon Denies Flyover of 'God and Country' Patriotic Event

NAMPA, Idaho, July 3 /Christian Newswire/ -- This marks the first time in the 42 year history of the event that a flyover request was denied by the Pentagon.

The event is held ever year to honor the spiritual foundations of our country with a special emphasis on the men and women who serve in the armed forces.

In past years, the "God and Country Rally" has focused on honoring and paying tribute to those veterans who have served our nation in the past and those who are currently on active duty.

At the rally this year, all five branches of the armed services were featured with over 60 new recruits sworn into the military at the event.

Governor Sarah Palin To Step Down

In a news conference from her Wasilla home, the first-term GOP governor said, "This decision has been in the works for awhile," adding that, "I'm not wired to operate under the same old politics as usual."

Amid speculation that Sen. John McCain's 2008 vice presidential running mate has had her eye on the 2012 presidential race, it's unclear why she's leaving before the end of her term. Her run as governor ends in 2010.

Palin, 45, did not take questions after her announcement, but compared herself to a good basketball point guard facing "a full court press from the national level."

"She knows exactly when to pass the ball so that a team can win,"

God's Word

All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-- it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

God's Word

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

Google Found My Father, But Can't Make Him My Dad

[from our friend T.C. Moore, Theological Graffiti]

I grew up without a father. Apparently, I was the love child of a fling my mom had with her married doctor nearly 30 years ago. She told him and he wanted her to abort the pregnancy. She tells me she went to the clinic not knowing what she would do, but could not go through with it. Whether there is any truth to her claim that "Jesus told her not to do it," I don't know. But as hard as life gets sometimes, I am grateful I exist.

When I was young I asked my mom who my father was. She told me his name and that he was married and was her doctor. She also gave me his long-obsolete business card which was of no value to me. In fact, I think i threw it away.

Since becoming a father myself, I have thought again about meeting/talking to guy whose DNA I share. But I have not been able to identify precisely why I want this. I know that meeting him or talking with him will not undue any of the pain his absence caused me as a child. I cannot even tell if I fully expect him to be interested in my life at all. All I know is that I'm curious. What I expect to find out, I don't know.

A few years back, I started Googling the name my mother gave me along with his profession and where I was born. (Google is pretty amazing, isn't it?)

Indy Churches: Tweet Others...

Practical use of Twitter growing among church congregations

EverydayChristian, June 30th -- Indianapolis

Even if you’re not on it regularly, you’ve heard of Twitter.

Plenty of churches have, too, and like many other individuals and institutions, they’re trying to figure out the most effective way to be able to use the microblogging Web site.

Three churches shared with Everyday Christian how they use the site to reach their members, attract seekers and how it fits into their overall social networking strategy.

Up On The Roof Looking For Mentors...

Subsequent coverage: Thanks to Fox59 Video...

Drive by... and HONK if you love MENTORING !

2008 photo by IndyChristian

June 30, Indianapolis, Starfish Initiative -- Mentor Services Director Bob Goodrum will be plucked from terra firma and placed atop our newly-renovated headquarters on June 30, 2009, at 8:00 a.m. Bob will spend 48-hours exposed to the elements (and the good-natured taunts of co-workers) to raise Indianapolis’ awareness of the efficacy of mentorship as a means to increase high school graduation rates and, of course, to recruit mentors.

“Mentors have proven to be enormously successful in terms of helping students stay focused on studies and graduate high school – and enroll in higher education,” Goodrum says. “Our mentors and students – we call them Starfish Scholars – have worked very hard and we have a 100% success rate. Every one of our Scholars has graduated high school and enrolled in higher education of some sort.

“And being a mentor is easy,” Goodrum continues. “You don’t have to teach. You don’t have to instruct. All you have to do is believe in the student, be yourself, and let your Scholar know you’re there for her or him.”

In one-hour intervals, Goodrum will be joined on the roof by such local movers and shakers as Ike Randolph of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and...

God's Word

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

God's Word

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. According to A psalm of David. O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am faint; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long? Turn, O LORD, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love. No one remembers you when he is dead. Who praises you from the grave? I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes. Away from me, all you who do evil, for the LORD has heard my weeping. The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer. All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed; they will turn back in sudden disgrace

IndyBikeHiker: Last Week As Pastor

[by our friend, Pastor John Hay @IndyBikeHiker...]

So, I'm walking through my last week as a pastor of a local congregation, preparing to transition to a new role as Director of Marketing for an international child sponsorship organization (www.childcareministries.org) that's based here in Indianapolis. I'm tying up some loose ends and taking care of some basic administrative matters while boxing up thousands of books and clearing clutter and anticipating new challenges that begin next Monday morning. It's an interesting juxtaposition of activities, thoughts and emotions.

On the one hand, I believe in the power and importance of local pastoral ministry--as much as ever. In this graced role, I have served as fully as I've been capable to this point in my life. Whatever else in the future I may do, contribute, accomplish, or wherever or however I serve, there will be nothing quite like serving as pastor to a local congregation rooted in a specific community setting. It offers sweet blessings and heart-rending disappointments--both sometimes flowing together. Of the congregations I've served, this is the only one that has not grown numerically during my time of service...and that has disappointed me. But I am satisfied that I have given myself fully to the work of ministry and I now pray that the next chapter of this congregation's life will flourish.

I am challenging myself to...
